Training for a triathlon can mean months of intense physical fitness drills. The training you focus on generally revolves around the three events you will participate in: swimming, cycling and running. While it’s good to train in the activities you’re going to be competing in, it can also become a double edged sword. Our bodies and muscles have memory and can eventually remember and grow accustomed to the same training routine if you do it over and over again. When muscles in the body anticipate the exercise routine, a plateau effect is created and this can greatly hinder progress, either in fitness or in weight loss if that is your goal. The best thing to do if you experience a plateau is to flip your fitness routine on its head. There are many ways to go about this, but one excellent way is to do cross-training, a great example being an in home workout called Les Mills PUMP. This new workout blends the ease of in home exercise with the expertise and results you get from the Les Mills BODYPUMP classes taught all over the world.
Les Mills & Beachbody United
Millions of people all over the world – several times each week – go to the gym, join 20 to 30 other like minded individuals, and workout to Les Mills BODYPUMP. Well, Les Mills PUMP is the in home version of the class. Beachbody and Les Mills decided to play on each other’s strengths to create a one of a kind program. Because BODYPUMP is a barbell-based weight training and muscle building program, so is its in home version. The program from Beachbody comes with 7 DVDs, a padded barbell, two sets of weights, and a barrage of booklets and guides to keep you on the 90 day schedule.
How Les Mills PUMP & BODYPUMP Work
Both programs – the class and the DVD home-based workout – rely on a light barbell weight and high rep principal, to create what Les Mills coins as the “Rep Effect.” The Les Mills PUMP class and home workout take very popular music and create a sequence of exercises which fits the tempo. For example, the squat sequence will take a 5 minute long song that has ever-changing tempos and build an exercise routine around those tempos. You might begin slowly with a 4/4 count and then gradually build up to singles or doubles, and then back to a slow 4/1 count. This type of ever-changing exercise tempo is repeated through the entire song. This type of “reps done to the tempo of the music” principal is then repeated to new music while you exercise different parts of your body. After an hour or so you have hit every major muscle group in your body and have done hundreds of reps in total.
What Effect Will PUMP Have For Me?
It doesn’t take long to see results with Les Mills PUMP. The unique way of working out with the ever changing tempos gets your muscles going right away. The nice thing about the program is that you never really outgrow it; you simply add more weight and it’s a whole new challenge. The Legs and Back sequences on each DVD are really the best parts of this workout. Your legs and back will experience a workout like you’ve never done before, especially in the first few weeks. The strength you gain from the squat, lunge, and deadlift sequences will augment your other training and help with the core stability and joint alignment required for the disciplines of triathlon, especially running injury-free.
And if you are simply hoping to burn off tons of calories and lose weight and body fat, or you want to improve your overall fitness an revitalise your life, the program contained in these discs may be the answer you are looking for. Here’s a couple of case studies from happy Pumpers, firstly Heather:
And secondly Carey, making it all look too easy. I doubt it is though.
All athletes need to look for new and inventive ways to progress. This means trying new things, some of which will work while others may not. Don’t limit yourself to one style of exercise just because it’s what you are used to or what you know. Branching out of the norm can deliver significant results. While there’s many ways to go about it, Les Mills PUMP offers a unique way to try something different without having to leave the house to accomplish it.
